Software Companies and Engineering Principles Applied

Microsoft

Microsoft Company is the world’s largest software manufactures.  It develops, manufactures, licenses, supports and sells computer software, consumer electronics, personal computers, and related services. Its best known software products are the Microsoft Windows line of operating systems.

Microsoft Engineering Principles Applied

As a first step in the move to modern engineering, Microsoft realigned the organization to map to business processes. This removed organizational barriers so that the right resources could be assigned to each project. Then started the process of merging software engineering (development and test) and service engineering (operations) roles into an agile DevOps team. The goal is to make each team member aware of the issues that other roles face so they can cooperatively resolve problems. This increases both the efficiency and effectiveness of the team. Ultimately, any sprint team member will be able to perform in any engineering role.

Apple

Apple is one of the company which makes and develop software
multinational technology company  that designs, develops, and sells consumer electronics, computer software, and online services. Here are the principle used by the apple company.

Principle One: Don’t Follow Your Customers; Lead Them

Apple tends to place less emphasis on evidence than on intuition, under the theory that consumers can’t tell you they want a product or function if they can’t yet visualize it. Instead, they need to be shown a superior alternative.

Principle Two: Temper Engineering With Art

Unfortunately, engineers tend to design products that they would want to use, which explains why a typical device is jam-packed with a hopelessly confusing array of features. Apple has succeeded by making sure its top decision makers all subscribe to the same minimalist philosophy.

Principle Three: Focus on the Few to Sell to the Many

Apple focuses on just a few products in each category. With time and money on its side, Apple do their best to make each item in its relatively small stable as perfect as possible.

Principle Four: Be Your Own Toughest Critic

The final ingredient to Apple’s success is an intangible energy and interest in doing well.

Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI)

The Capability Maturity Model (CMM) is a methodology used to develop and improve organization’s software development process which describes a five-level evolutionary path of increasingly organized and systematically more mature processes. It established a framework which contributes to continue process of software development and standards to specify an effective quality system for manufacturing and service industries.
